Study shows human curiosity is a network security risk
The Department of Homeland Security recently performed an experiment to find out how difficult it would be to hack into company computers. And they found that it isn't very difficult at all, when you rely on human curiosity and trust to get you in. Several recent hacks are examples of these results: companies like RSA have suffered from attacks that exploited human error.
The experiment: Staff planted USB drives and CDs in the parking lots of government and private contractors' offices. The devices were found by employees who picked them up, thinking they had been dropped. Testers watched to see what employees would do next...
The results: 60% of employees who picked up a device plugged that device into an office computer to find out what was on it. Devices with official logos on them were plugged in 90% of the time.
Experts in the security industry have long been aware of the risk human vulnerability presents for network security. The results of this test prove that curiosity and trust often win out over any security precautions that might be associated with unknown devices. So, how can IT professionals protect against this kind of human error? Many government and financial organizations rely on OPSWAT's MetaDefender for Media (MD4M), a perfect solution to deal with the risks associated with peripheral media devices.
The solution: Organizations position MD4M stations at building entrances, creating checkpoints where all USB drives, CDs and DVDs must be multi-scanned and processed. MD4M detects devices then scans the contents using multiple anti-malware engines. After the quick scan, organizations can determine whether to allow a device or to allow certain files to be transferred to a clean disk or network folder.
MD4M creates a system for controlling the files that enter an organization and a customizable way to address the results of the scanning process, effectively and efficiently protecting against human trust and curiosity issues. Learn more about MD4M on opswat.com.

Use OPSWAT Certified Products! What do you do after using AppRemover to easily and cleanly uninstall your security application? We've got a tip: stay protected and compatible by choosing OPSWAT Certified applications to replace the ones you remove!
OPSWAT Certified applications are verified interoperable with leading technology solutions (from vendors like Juniper, Cisco, Citrix, Barracuda and many others) so that you experience fewer compatibility issues when you connect to your network. These solutions use OPSWAT's OESIS Framework to gather information about the health of your computer, and they need to be able to communicate with your security applications. The higher the level of OPSWAT certification that an application receives, the higher its interoperability and communication with OESIS Framework powered solutions - which means fewer issues that keep you from connecting.
See the full list of OPSWAT Certified products to check for your vendor's application. If your application is not yet certified, contact the vendor to request that they submit their product for OPSWAT Certification!
